Bi-lateral Hip Replacement

It’s been 8 weeks post operation. Number one just do it. I put it off for 10 years. I could have been living a pain free and more active life style all these years. I now only have pain when it rains and when I work out which is 6 days a week and and my doctor said that I could go back to playing basketball. I play in the most competitive leagues in the Phila., area. I’m not talking a litlle pick up ball. Anyhow 2 months after surgery I can see that my active life style is back on track.

OK, for the nuts and bolts of the story. I am a 53 yr. active male. I in line skate, play organized basketball, body board and much more. BUT one does not have to be a very good athlete to want, have or need the opration. In the rehab(Bryn Mawr) that I went to I was the youngest person there and I can tell you that I marveled at the tenacity of this older crowd. Yes it’s a b**** all the pre-opp Dr. visits, giving blood ect. Yes when they take you off the spinal tap then to the morphine pump it hurts like HECK! BUT it gets better. You don’t notice but after the morphine it gets replaced with strong oral pain meds and you are walking w/ the walker then a couple weeks later to the cane and you are driving again. I was out driving 1 month after although no one knew but I felt I could do it.I was offically Ok’d at 6 weeks.

I was going to the gym 5 weeks post and am getting around very easily. I never applied for handicapped parking and the extra walking has only made me stronger. As for walking I met a woman before I had my operation. She told me her husband had the same double hips and at 6 weeks was walking 2 blocks and I thought gheez! I hope that I fare better than that. Well at 6 weeks I walked 3 miles and can easily ride the stationary bike till exaustion. I may even take my bike down to the shore(Ventnor N.J.). That’s the beach to most of you. One last thought. Yes there is pain, discomfort, sleepless nights but they become quick memories and and now you have the rest of your life to walk on the beach!!!!
